Why are the formal elements so important?
The formal elements help photographers and artists to describe what is physically in front of them. Without these, it would be hard for them to express in detail what they are seeing.
One of the most important formal elements would be colour. The colour of an image can change the whole feel and atmosphere that the image gives. For example, bright colours might give the image a warm, happy feel while dull colours used on the same image might create a sad, depressing atmosphere. The difference between bright and dull colours in photography is so important and makes a huge difference.Tone is also very important, because there is a big difference between light and dark. Light and dark tones are used in all images and contrast each other to create form .Form is important in photography because it shows that the object is 3D and not a flat. This can completely change the way the object is seen. Depth is an important element because without it, it is hard to make out the distance or length of something. Depth in photography makes the shot look more realistic and emphasises distance of the object so that it is clear to the eye. Texture is another important element. It can affect the viewer in different ways, for example a photo of silk might made the viewer want to feel it, but a photo of something sharp or prickly will have the opposite affect. Either way, texture in photography allows the viewer to imagine the feel of the object, which will really connect them to the photograph. Lines are important in photography because they make up so many things around us. Different types of lines such as straight lines, wavy lines, and bold lines can have different affects on the image and really change the outcome of the shot. Pattern adds interest to an image. The viewer may admire a photo of an artistic, man-made pattern on a wall or floor, or they may be fascinated by a photo natural pattern that they had not noticed or ever seen before. Finally, blurring is an important element because it can change the way we see an image. It can help us to understand what is in front of what, and how far away something is compared to something else. It helps our brains to process what is where in the picture.
