Work Diary - Location Contrast 1

Evaluation

I found the location contrast shoot quite difficult. Although I could see many different contrasting colours, I found it difficult to think of things other than colours to photograph. Because of this I ended up with lots of images that were very similar. Most of the photos that I had taken of things that were not colours did not show contrast clearly enough.

Despite this being quite a difficult shoot for me, I did take some quite good photos for contrasting colours which I am happy about. I tried to be creative and composed my own images rather than just taking pictures of objects where they were. For example I found a bright leaf and thought this would be a good example of contrast if I could find a dull surface to put it on.

This image I had taken was supposed to show the contrast between different textures, but because of the dull lighting the difference between the two textures is not that obvious. Also the line separating the two different textures is not clear enough so it is hard to see that they are separate and their is not much contrast between them. I feel that this photo would be a more effective contrast image if the colours of the two different textures were not so similar.

I like this image I had taken during the location contrast shoot, as it shows two types of contrast. We can see the clear contrast between the sizes of the leaves, but there is also contrast between the bright colour of the leaves against the dull colour of the wall. The smaller leaf contains yellow, orange, red and green tones which all contrast against each other as they are all bright colours. Lines are also visible in the form of the leaf veins and the lines between the bricks.

Progression

If I was to go and shoot location contrast again I would make sure to go on a bright day because I found that with this shoot the dull lighting reduced the quality of the photos and made the contrast less clear in the images. Taking pictures in the sun will make the tones clearer and therefore enhancing the contrast. I would use my creativity more and move objects around to make a contrasting image rather than just taking a picture of what is in front of me. I would also try to produce a larger variety of images rather than images that only contrast by colour, and would shoot in a larger variation of locations for more varied images.

This picture below is one I found on the internet. It shows contrast in a very creative way. This is the kind of approach I would like to attempt, and create my own image rather than just taking a picture of what is already there. I like the way this image is so unique and abstract but at the same time the contrast is the part of the image that you notice first. The plain background is effective as there is no distraction from the woman's face. I would defiantly like to try and photograph more creative examples of contrast in the future as this image has inspired me.

Work Diary - Multiple Imagery

Evaluation

This was the first time I had tried multiple imagery and I quite enjoyed taking the images and creating the multiple image. I tried to make all of the images I used in my multiple image quite similar in terms of content and composition so that when they were put together the full result will look very effective and this benefitted my work. I liked how I was able to rearrange the images in the order that I preferred and was able to edit the images all together rather than separately so that they would all look even. I am happy with the result of my multiple Image and think that it is some of my best photography so far.

If I had to point out a negative of this task I would say that sometimes it was hard to make all of the images similar in composition, and sometimes It was difficult to think of a large variation of images to take, but despite this I enjoyed the task.

This was my first attempt of multiple imagery. I took pictures standing in various different locations. This works so well because of the obvious contrast between each different type of floor. I enhanced the colours to make them more vibrant in order to improve the contrast. In some of the images contrast can be seen in a different way, as my dark shoes contrast against lighter backgrounds so the shape of my shoes can be clearly seen. Lines are visible in many of the individual image, in the form of floor tiles, benches of painted lines on the floor. I think this works quite effectively. The only negative of this image in my opinion is that it was hard to get my feet in the exact same position, so they look different in each picture. Although this is only a small detail of the whole picture, I feel that the image would have been improved if my feet were in the exact same position in each image.


Progression

I wanted to try some more multiple imagery as I found it quite enjoyable, and I wanted to try one with only 9 images in. I looked through my pictures from walk 3 and I thought that I could make quite a good multiple image out of them, which would give a sense of adventure and nature. I much prefer this image to the first one I had tried, mainly because these individual images are all taken at different angles and of various different places or objects, whereas the individual images in the first one are all taken at the same angle and have similar content. A lot of lines are visible in this image in the form of benches, and trees, and it also includes a lot of natural colours like greens and browns. This adds to the natural feel of the overall image, and I enhanced these colours for this reason. I am very happy with this image and think it is one of my best images overall.

Work Diary - Walk 1

Evaluation

I enjoyed walk 1 as I was not limited to one specific area like some of the other shoots. I liked how there were 3 things to photograph; back of heads, sense of journey and autumn colours, as this gave me a larger variation of things for me to look for. My favourite part of the walk was taking the sense of journey images as this was something I had not done before.  I found that it allowed me to be more creative than some of the other shoots had allowed me to, as I was creating a scene rather than taking images close up to identify the formal elements. I experimented with depth quite a lot on this walk as I found it made the sense of journey images more effective. I tried to experiment with different angles, so on many cases I took a lot of photos of the same object or scene, but from different angles. I feel this benefitted my work as I was able to look at a range of photos and choose which angle I preferred. 

I found it quite difficult to get very varied images speciffically for autumn colours as this was limited to mostly leaves, so I ended up with a lot of similar images. Despite this I managed to take a lot of varied images for sense of journey and back of heads. Although I enjoyed photographing it, I found it a bit difficult to take images for sense of journey, as this required taking images of a scene, rather than close ups which I took for autumn colours. Even though this was slightly tricky, I still managed to produce a few sense of journey images that I am very happy with.

This picture I had taken during walk 1 shows depth quite well, as the trees get smaller the further away from the camera they are. The dark silhouette of the tree contrasts significantly against the plain white sky, which makes the outline of the tree trunk and the branches very obvious. I like how the texture can be seen on the tree nearest the camera as it is shown very close up. A lot of lines are visible in the form of the branches on the trees. Something I think could be improved in this photo is the lighting, and if i were to take this sam photo again I would make sure to take it earlier, as it was beginning to get dark, but also take it on a sunny day so that the texture and tones in the image could be more obvious.

I really like this picture as it shows depth very clearly to emphasise the length of the bench. I like how there is one leaf very close to the camera while all the others are gathered at the other end, and also how the yellow leaves stand out and contrast against the black bench. Lines are visible in this image in the form of the bench, which also help to show depth. The quality of this image is not as i took this image when it was beginning to get dark. I feel that if I took this image in the sun or daylight the result would be a lot better, and the leaf nearest the camera would be more focused in order to see the texture and tones clearer. 

Progression

If I was to go on walk 1 again I would go on a bright and sunny day in order to improve the quality of the images. The textures, tones and overall detail of different parts of the image would be a lot clearer, therefore making a better quality image. I would also try to take a larger variation of images for autumn colours, as I struggled to think of a lot of things to shoot for this, and ended up with a lot of similar pictures.

 

I found an example of autumn photography which I quite like, and I would like to take similar photos to this in the future. My favourite aspect of this photo is the lighting. The highlights and shadows really add to this image and the autumnal feel of it. It also allows the form of the pumpkin to be clearly seen. This is the kind of lighting I would have like during my walk as it would have enhanced the tones, colours and form. I like the idea of the pumpkin as it symbolises Halloween which is in autumn. This picture made me think about taking pictures of objects that symbolise autumn, rather than just the physical look of autumn. This picture has inspired me to think more creatively when given a topic to photograph, and also think about the kind of lighting I need to create the feel I want in the image.

Work Diary - Mapplethorpe Studio

Evaluation

I quite enjoyed the Mapplethorpe studio shoot as this was the first time I had tried to take photos in the style of a famous photographer.  During the shoot I tried to focus a lot on the composition of the images than I normally would, as a lot Mapplethorpe's photography clearly focuses on composition. I thought about the kind of compositions Mapplethorpe had used in his portrait photography and tried to replicate some of these which resulted in some good images. As well as this I though of some of my own compositions which left me with some very interesting and creative images. When it came to editing I made one or too black and white in order to stick to the typical Mapplethorpe style, but with the others I adjusted the lighting in order to clearly show form and tone, which Mapplethorpe clearly shows in his portraits.

When It came to thinking of my own, unique compositions, I found this slightly difficult as it was hard to think of ones that looked obviously inspired by Mapplethorpe without replicating his own. To overcome this I though of the different compositions and positions of his portrait and edited them slightly to make them my own.

The composition of this image is not very strong. Mapplethorpe's portraits focus on the detail and tones in the face rather than the background, however there is too much empty space in this frame. If i was to shoot this same photo again I would take it as a portrait instead of a landscape, so the face would fit into the frame better and the empty space will be filled. This would also allow us to see the faced closer up, showing the details and tones clearer.

I really like this image, as the tones, highlights and shadows are very clear in the face, which resembles Mapplethorpe's work. The contrast between the person and the background, and that image is taken from the side allows shape to be shown very clearly, which is what I like most about this picture. I think that editing this picture black and white would be very effective as the tones in the face will be emphasised.

Progression

If I was to shoot Mapplethorpe images in the studio again I would try to experiment with more compositions as I found in this shoot they were very limited. I would also try to replicate more of Mapplethorpe's compositions and look as his work in more detail in order to produce images which look more obviously inspired by Mapplethorpe. I would also try to make sure each image focused on the face as much as possible, and try to fit the faces in the frame without empty space in the frame.

 

The picture below is an example of Mapplethorpe's portrait photography. I really like the composition of this photo, and how it draws us to the face. During my Mapplethorpe shoot I didn't think about positioning the arms in different way like this, but I think it is very effective. Although there is a lot of space in the frame, we are still drawn to the face as it contrasts significantly against the dark background. After looking at this picture I feel inspired to try photographing people in  different like Mapplethorpe does to add interest to my photography but also to draw attention to the face like this one.

 

Work Dairy - Walk 2

Evaluation

I really enjoyed walk two as I was not limited to the college grounds and could take a large variation of images. I also liked how there were 3 things to shoot; sense of journey, autumn colours and back of heads, as this enabled me to have more to look for rather than one specific formal element. There were many opportunities to take autumnal images as we walked through many paths surrounded by trees and also passed some forest, so the majority of my images were of autumn colours. The walk gave the opportunity to also take better back of head images as there was a larger variation of backgrounds I could have used, for example a lake or a road. This resulted in some interesting images. I enjoyed taking sense of journey images and found that these were not difficult to take in this area, as I walked past roads, paths, benches and bus stops. I liked editing the images I had taken and tried to adjust the colour in order to bing out the autumn tones like oranges and reds, and this really benefitted some of my images and made it more apparent that they were autumn images.

There were not many negatives to this walk, however if I have to point one out I'd say that most of my autumn colours images looked the same, as I motly took pictures of trees and leaves for this, however I still ended up with very varied back of head and sense of journey images.

I really like this image i had taken during walk 2, as the background had slightly blurred while the back of the head is focused. I made sure the back of head was not central so that the scenery could be focused on. I really like the reflection and highlights in the lake, and also the lines in the photo, in the form of the bench and the outline of the river. This is different to my other back of head images, as the background contains a lot of content, whereas my other back of head photos have had a relatively plain background like a wall or a bush.

This picture would have been better if the camera had focused on the berries rather than the leaves around it, as their colour stands out against the leaves. Despite this, I like how the berries are not central so that we are able to see the different colours of the leaves in the background. I like how the red colour contrasts against the green colour in the leaves. 

Progression

If I were to go on another walk taking back of head, autum colours, and sense of journey images, I would want to explore a range of different areas for some really varied images, especially for sense of journey. I would try to take a larger variety of images for autumn colours as I struggled to think of different ideas for this and so ended up with a lot of similar images.

The picture below is an example of journey photography, and I would quite like to take photos similar to this. Most of my journey photography did not actually include people, as I just took pictures of objects which implied a journey such as sign posts and pathways. After looking at this image I think I could have created better journey images if I included people in them as this makes the journey aspect clearer, and the fact that they are walking away from the camera also does this. The tunnel is effective as we do not know what is on the other side, or where this person is heading. In this picture, a sense of mystery is also created as we cannot see the persons face but I like that about it. This image has inspired my to take more sense of journey imagery but including people, as this works more effectively.

Work Diary - Mapplethorpe Location

Evaluation

I found it quite difficult to take pictures in the style of Mapplethorpe. To start off with I began just taking any portraits, and not thinking about Mapplethorpe's work as I did them. These images were not focused enough on the face but more on the background, which isnt what Mapplethorpe's portraits are like. There was too much empty space in the frame and the face was not shown close up enough. I also found it hard to come up with many different composition ideas, as Mapplethorpe's own are quite unique.

On the other hand, I did end up taking some reasonable images when I went out a second time to shoot.I thought about Mapplethorpe's work and the kind of compositions used in his photography. I made sure the second lot of pictures I took were very focused on the face, with no empty space in the frame. When it came to editing the photos I tried to make some of them look similar to Mapplethope's, and experimented with black and white. This benefitted the result of some of the images as the tones, highlighted and shadows in the face were more emphasised, like in Mapplethorpe's work, but I thought some of them looked better in colour. I am very happy with the straight images from this session and think that some of them are some of my best shots overall.

This was one of the first pictures i had taken. I quite like the picture itself but it does not look Mapplethorpe inspired. There is far too much empty space in the frame and the face is not shown close up enough. Because of this the tones and details in the face are not clear, and my focus lies on the contrast between the two colours of the wall, rather than the facial features. 

This picture looks more Mapplethorpe inspired as it is focused on the face rather than the background. Comparing it to the top picture, there is a lot less empty space in the frame and there facial features can be seen a lot clearer. I am happy with the outcome of this image and think that it does look inspired by Mapplethorpe's portrait composition.

Progression

If I was to go out and shoot Mapplethorpe location again I would probably experiment with a larger variety of unique and abstract compositions, as this is what Mapplethorpe did. I would also try out different props as Mapplethorpe did this in some of his portraits, but also to make a more interesting, creative image.

The picture below is one of Mapplethorpe's photographs. He uses props like this in a lot of his work which adds interest to the image, while also filling the frame. After looking at this I feel that I could have improved my Mapplethorpe photos using props like this, as they can completely change the image but also create an interesting composition and add interest to a plain image.

Work Diary - Studio Contrast

Evaluation

I found studio contrast quite difficult to do, and a lot harder than studio form and studio back of head photography. The first thing I thought of which relates to contrast was contrast between colours, so this is what i started taking pictures of, however after this I found it hard to think of any other types of contrast to photograph. This resulted in a lack of photos, and most of the images I had taken were contrast between colours. I wanted to make sure the contrast was the emphasised feature of the photos, however I wasn't sure how to do this so in some of my images the contrast is not that clear. 

On the other hand, I tried to use my creativity to think of different, unique examples of contrast. I used props to try and do this which resulted in some good images with unusual examples of contrast. 

 This image I had taken during the studio contrast session was supposed to show the contrast in hair length, however this is not made obvious enough. This picture looks more like back of head portraiture rather than contrast. In order to make it clear that the difference in hair length was what I was trying to emphasise, I should have made Connie and Josh put their heads nearer together, and I could also edit it black and white so that the focus is on the context of the image and not the colours, so the contrast is more obvious. On the other hand I could also make the colours more vibrant so that the image could be contrasting in 3 ways, the contrast between the length of hair, gender and colour.

This is an idea I came up with towards the end of the session, once I had shot all the obvious examples of contrast. I wanted to emphasise the difference in height, and used the prop of a ladder to make it clear that this is what I wanted the image to focus on. I really like how this image turned out and I think it clearly shows contrast, while also being unique and abstract.

Progression

If I were to shoot contrast in the studio again, I would probably find more props to use as I found that I had nothing to take pictures of despite people, and props might benefit my work and allow me to be more creative like in the photo using the ladder. I will also try to edit the photos so that the focus is on the contrast, for example if the picture was not showing contrast of colour, I could make the image black and white so that the focus is on the context rather than the colours in the image. 

 

This picture below shows an example of studio contrast, and I would like to take similar images to this in the future. I uses props rather than people to show contrast, which is visible due to the lighting. After looking at this picture I was to experiment photographing objects rather than people, as its something have not practised a lot.

 

 

Work Diary - Back of head (Studio)

Evaluation

I enjoyed the back of head studio shoot as the quality of the image was a lot better than the location shoot. This was because of the studio lighting which really brought out the different tones in each persons hair. I also preferred the studio shoot to the location shoot because I could shoot against plain coloured background which makes the image focus on the persons head, whereas with the location shoot the background sometimes distracted attention from the main point of the photo. I quite liked using the prop of a feather scarf as this made the images more unique, as it stood out against the plain background.

Something which I found was difficult about this shoot, is that it was hard to get very varied images and there was not many different compositions that could be created in the studio. Because of this many of my images looked very similar, but just with different coloured backgrounds. To overcome this I could have used more than one persons head in an image so that a larger variation of compositions could have been created.

I really like this picture I had taken during the back of head studio session. I like how the jacket and the background are the same colour, so that the bright pink scarf is really contrasting and vibrant. The highlights and shadows in the jacket create visual form and texture. I edited the colours in order to make the feather scarf stand out even more, so that this image shows contrast as well as back of head. The prop causers the image to be quite unusual and abstract which I really like about it. 

Because Vandana has very dark hair, it is hard to see the back of her head against the black background. The pink scarf is the only thing that can really be seen in the picture which defeats the purpose of the shoot. If I was to shoot this image again I would shoot against a different colour background so that the back of head could be seen a lot more clearly.

Progression

If I was to shoot back of head portraiture in the studio again i would experiment with different angles, as in this shoot I shot every picture from the same angle. I would also experiment with different compositions by using more than one head in each picture, which would also make the images more interesting, and take up some of the space in the frame. I would use appropriate backgrounds depending on the colour of the persons hair, as in this shoot it is hard to see the persons head against the background. I feel that the use of props really benefitted my work so I would experiment with more of these if I was to do this shoot again.

This picture below has given me quite a lot of inspiration for back of head photography. With mine, I have only been focussing on the actual head, and been close ups of it, however this image showed me that you can still have a goo back of head image but with more in the frame, like various props. This is a lot more interesting than a simple image of a head, and has a lot more meaning. In this picture the head only takes up a small amount of the frame, but this allows us to see more details in the frame like the guitar which I think really makes the image. After looking at this picture I really want to try and take similar back of head images like this, that include props and more content in the frame rather than just the head.

Work Diary - Studio Form

Evaluation

This was the first time I had shot in the studio and I enjoyed this session. Because of the studio lighting, the highlights and shadows in each picture allowed form to be shown very clearly, and also texture. I liked shooting against plain backgrounds as it made shape more visible, and also did not distract attention away from the main aspect of the image. The plain backgrounds also sometimes contrasted against the content of the image. I am happy with the outcome of this shoot and really like some of the images produced from this session.

A problem I had with shooting form in the studio was that sometimes I found it tricky using the studio camera which i had not used before. The zoom and focus was different to the cameras I had previously used so it took a while to get used to this. Another problem with this session was that It was difficult to get very varied images. All of my pictures were of either faces or clothing, so most of them turned out quite similar.

This picture I had taken during the session shows form very clearly as the highlights and shadows in the jacket contrast against each other. Texture is also very clearly shown which i like about the image. I think that the fact the image only shows clothing, and not a face benefits the picture, however I think that the picture would be even better if I had zoomed in further into the jacket so that the form could have been focused on even more. This would also get rid of the empty space in the frame.

After taking portraits from the front, I wanted to try out different angles in order to create more varied images. I decided to take some portraits from the side, and I liked the result of this angle. Different tones are shown very clearly as highlights are visible at the front of the face, while at the side of the face it is a lot darker so that form is clearly shown. Shape is also visible, as the studio lighting allows the outline of the face to contrast against the dull background.

Progression

If I was to do this shoot again, I would try to shoot more than just faces and clothes. I could bring props into the studio and shoot their form with the studio lighting. I would also try to experiment with more angles as more of my images ended up very similar in this shoot, and there was a lack of images overall. I could include more than one person in the frame to make the images more interesting and so that more form is shown. I could also edit the images in order to make the form the more noticeable part of the image, so for example editing the images black and white so that focus is not on the colour, but more on the tones. 

 

This image below is an example of the type of studio form photography I would like to take. It shows the clear form of an object rather than a person, which I think is more effective. It has also been edited black and white which is a good idea as the tones, shadows and highlights can be seen more clearly. The shadow below it also helps emphasise the form, which us another reason objects would be better for form photography. The way the can is misshaped emphasises the form as there are more shadows and highlights. This image has inspired me to practise more object photography in the studio as I haven't had much practice with this.

 

Work Diary - Back of head (location)

Evaluation

I really enjoyed the back of head location shoot. I found it was different to photographing the formal elements like I had previously done, as it enabled me to be more creative. It was enjoyable looking for interesting backgrounds to shoot the back of head in front of, and after shooting in front of obvious background like walls, I tried looking for more interesting backgrounds. I also began taking pictures with two heads in the frame and took them from different angles instead of shooting just one head from straight on. This enabled me to create a larger variation of compositions, as I have more in the frame. I was also able to experiment with a different setting on the camera as an aim of the task was to make the background of the photo blurred, but the head focussed. At first this did not work well however the more I tried, the more effective the images looked. This blurring allowed the images to show depth, as well as back of heads. 

Something tricky about this task was that It was hard to get very varied pictures. It was hard to think of many compositions that you could create using just the back of the head, so a lot of my images ended up similar. Despite this I tried to overcome this by including more than one head and using a variety of different camera angles. I tried to find more interesting and unusual backgrounds to shoot against to also overcome this. 

I like this picture i had taken during the back of head location session. I like how there are two heads in the frame rather than one, and this shows depth as the head nearest the camera is clearer than the one further away. I also like the background of the photo, and how it is not just plain and shows some of the surroundings. I realised that this camera showed contrast quite well, as both people are wearing dark clothes and have dark/dull hair which really contrasts against the vivid colours of the nature in front of them.

This was the first image i had taken during the session. The background has blurred very well so that depth is clearly shown in the image. The back of the head is very focused so that the different tones in the hair are visible, and the texture of it. the dark hair contrasts against the vivid colours of the nature in the background which I think improves the image. Despite these positive aspects, I feel that this image would have been a lot better if it was not as zoomed, so that the whole lengths of hair could have been visible. I also think there is a bit too much space in the frame, as the focus is supposed to be on the back of head rather than the background.

Progression

If I was to go out and shoot back of head location pictures again i would try even more different angles in order to get a larger variety of images, and use more heads in order to create lots of different compositions. I would also use a larger variation of backgrounds to avoid images being very similar. If I found a good background, I could take lots of images of the heads in front of it but from a range of different angles, so that I had a larger chance of taking a good image.

The image below is an example of the kind of back of head photography I would like to achieve in the future. It is quite different from the shots I had taken. Mine had been very focused on the back of the head, rather than the surroundings or other content in the frame. In this photo the head only takes up a small part of the frame, so that the position of the person and the surroundings are visible. This has inspired me to focus a bit more on the other content in the frame rather than just the head, because although the back of head is the main focus, the surroundings or position of the person can completely change the feel of the image and add a lot of interest to it.

 

Work Diary - Shape

Evaluation

I had a lot of time to photograph shape which resulted in a lot of images taken. At first I did not have much idea of what to photograph, however as time went by I was able to spot more shape around me and examples of shape that weren't so obvious. I tried to use a camera angle which would emphasise the outline of the object, and one idea I had was to position the camera so that the background of the photo was the sky. This made the object form a silhouette which from my research I know is common in shape photography. The dark silhouette contrasted against the light sky in oder to show up the shape very clearly. Another reason I tried to get plain backgrounds in the frame was so that the focus of the image was on the shape and not the content in the background. Sometimes in order to do this I had to move objects around so that they were against a plain background, which made the shape a lot clearer than it would have been if I had photographed it against a complicated background with a lot in the frame. 

One slight problem I had during the shape session was lighting. It was very dull outside which meant that the contrast between the shape of the object and the background was harder to see, which made the shape less obvious. Despite this the sun did come out a few times which enabled me to take some good shape images. 

I really like this image I had taken in the shape session. I had angled the camera to point upwards so that the background of the image was the sky. This caused a clear contrast between  the building dark and the light plain sky, causing a silhouette and a clear outline of the shape. This image also shows lines in the form of the side of the building and the metal pipes. I really like this image and think that that it shows shape very well.

Although this image shows clear bright shapes as the vivid colours contrast a lot against the white background. I do not think it is a good image because of the lighting I had taken it inside so there was no sun, which decreased the quality of the photo. I also think that the coloured people should take up a lot more space in the frame, so that the focus is on the shape and less on the background. The image clearly shows colour, so to make the image focus more on the shape than the colours I could edit the image black and white. This will still clearly show shape in the picture.

Proggression

If I was to go out and take pictures of shape again, I would do it on a bright day so that the shape in the images would be a lot clearer and I would have produced some better quality images. The dull lighting really affected my images and I think they could have all been a lot better if i had taken them in the sun.

This image below is a good example of shape photography. this is the kind of lighting I would have liked when shooting shape, as it really enhances the image. This image works because of the brightness, however if it was a dull day it would not have been as effective because the hands wouldn't contrast enough with the sky, but in this case because the sky is bright blue so the contrast is clear.

Work Diary - Texture

Evaluation

I really enjoyed taking texture pictures. At first I didn't really notice many textures around me apart from tree trunks and leaves. A lot of the images i was taking were very similar, however the more i looked, the more i noticed less obvious textures, such as worn away paint and cracks in the cement. After looking at other texture photography, I had realised that most if it was taken very close up, so this is what i tried to do with my pictures which really emphasised the texture and benefitted the end result. 

On the other hand, sometimes if was hard to photograph the texture of objects because of the lighting. If the sun wasn't out then the texture wasn't shown very clearly which was the whole point of the task. This made it difficult for me to get many images. Also, sometimes i took images which did not show texture clearly enough as the image was not taken close up enough, and a lot of the surroundings were focused on more than the texture. I realised this and tried to take more images that were very close up and really clearly showed the detail, tones and texture. 

I really like this image I had taken. Lines are shown very clearly in the form of the sides of the bridge, and depth is very clearly shown as the sides of the bridge get smaller the further away they are from the camera. Colour is shown clearly as there are bright green, yellow and blue tones in the image. Despite how much I like this picture, and the formal elements it shows, i do not think this is a good image for texture, as there is a lot more in the frame than the concrete floor. The concrete is also slightly blurred which means the texture can't been seen as clearly. To make this a better image for texture I should have taken the photo as a close up of the floor, which would have made the texture more clear.

I really like the content of this image, as it shows a clearly rough texture. I also like the angle it has been taken from because it emphasises the texture and shows depth because the bumps on the wall further away from the camera are more blurry than the ones nearest the camera. Despite this, because of the dull lighting the texture is not as clear and emphasised and clear as it could be. If i was to take this image again I would make sure the sun was out.

Progression

If i were to go out and shoot texture again i would go on a very sunny day so the texture can be seen very clearly in the images. I would also make sure that the camera was focussed and zoomed on the texture, so that the background or other things in the frame does not distract attention the texture. 

This picture is the kind of texture photography I would like to do in the future. It is a very close up shot in order to clearly show and emphasise the texture. When I shot texture a lot of the images were not taken close up enough, so included other unnecessary things in the frame which distracted attention away from the main feature of the photo, the texture. This picture has definitely made me think about taking pictures closer up in order to emphasise the main aspect and show the detail more clearly. 

Work Diary - Photojoiner

Evaluation

I found taking the photos for photojoiner quite difficult. For my first try I did not take the pictures close up enough, so that i could not put the images together to create one person. Instead, I took the images from different angles. I did still try to create something out of the pictures I had and I quite liked the outcome, even though it wasn't what I had aimed for. For another photo joiner, I found that I had taken all of the images at a different closeness, so this was also hard to put the pictures together. Because of this I am not happy with the outcome of this certain photojoiner.

 

This is my first attempt. It doesn't really work in the way I had wanted it to as the individual pictures do not fit together well to produce a single image, but show lots of images of the same thing. I should have taken individual pictures which were a lot closer up of different details of the person and then tried to fit them together to create an image of one person. Also I had taken the images from different angles which also doesn't help with fitting them together. Despite these negative points, although it is not a good example of a photo joiner, I still think the outcome is quite interesting and unique.

 

Progression

I wanted another go at a photojoiner as my first was not what I wanted. I focused on taking close uos of different parts of the trees but from the same angle so that I could fit them together to create one image. I didn't use too many photos as I knew this would be a lot more complicated and photojoiner is not my strongest point. I found it easy to take the pictures, but fitting them together was slightly harder. It was difficult getting them to fit in a way which made them create a clear single image, however I am happy with the outcome of this. Some of the images fit together very well, but the ones which don't make the image seem more abstract which is not a bad thing. I like how the edge of the photojoiner is not straight like a single photo as it makes it more unique.

Work Diary - Movement

Evaluation

Overall I found the movement session very difficult, which resulted in a lack of images produced. I found it hard to actually create a blurred movement look, as the camera sometimes still properly focused. Because of this I had to try a lot of times to shoot the same thing, and ended up deleting most of my images. Also it was hard to angle the camera because I was quickly moving it, so the content in some of the photos is not straight or only fills the corner of the frame. Sometimes when I could create a blur, it did not look effective. 

Despite these negatives, I did end up a few nice movement images. After taking a lot of images moving the camera from left to right, I tried moving it in different ways like vertically or in a circular motion, which worked the best.  

I really like this picture I had taken during the movement session. I moved the camera in a circular motion around me to create this. The camera had focused on my feet and everything around them was circularly blurred. I think this image would have been better if the side of the pavement was straight and in line. I also think it would be better if i adjusted the settings so that the blurring effect was larger and the movement was more obvious. 

This was a result of moving the camera from left to right, creating a horizontal blur. I quite like this image as the movement is clear however the actual buildings do not take up enough space in the frame. If I was to shoot this image again I would take it closer up so that the buildings could be seen more clearly. Colour is shown clearly in this image which I quite like.

Progression

If i were to go out and shoot movement again I would adjust the camera settings so that the blur was larger and more obvious in each image, as i wasted a lot of time trying to create a blur in this shoot. All of my images were taken by me moving the whole camera, however I could have kept the camera still but had something moving in the frame to become blurred, like someone running past. this would have created really good images as the surroundings would be clear but the person would created a blur. This would make their movement more obvious. 

This is an example of the kind of movement photography I would like to create in the future. During my movement photography session, I focused on moving the camera so that everything in the frame became blurred, which didn't work too well. Instead, I should have tried something like this where the person in the frame moves and becomes blurred but the background is still and focused. This could be achieved by adjusting the camera settings in order to create really obvious movement.

 

I could also try it the other way round, so the person in the frame is focused but the background shows movment. I find this quite effective and shows us what that person would be seeing, for example in this photo below.

 

 

These images have inspired to experiment more with movement and try to show movement in different parts of the image, rather than moving the whole camera so that everything is blurry.

 

Work Diary - Tone

Evaluation

I found the tone session quite enjoyable. It was the first time I had shot photos using the black and white mode on the camera. I felt that this benefited the result of my images as I could clearly see in viewfinder the different shadows, highlights and tones of the frame content. This was useful because If I was about to take a photo, but then saw that there was not much variation of tone in the viewfinder I would move on to take a picture of something different, however If I took the pictures in colour I might not be able to see the different tones as clear, and if I then came to Photoshop it to be black and white I might realise that there is not much contrast between the tones. As well as this, I found the tone images enjoyable and easy to edit, as the tone was already very clear due to the black and white camera mode. I also think that some of the camera angles I had used in the session enhanced the pictures and made the tones of the images stand out. I am happy with the outcome of all of my straight Images from this session and think that they all clearly show tone.

If I had to reflect on the negative aspects of this session, I would say one would be that It took me a while to find the right things to shoot. I tried to look for objects which had the most contrasting tones, so that they would show a variety of tones rather than just one. This resulted in a lack of photos, however the ones I did have were good quality. 

I like this photo I took of a rose during the tone session, because there is a large variation of tones in it. I also like how the rose is off centre so that the leaves in the background can be seen. The light tones rose contrasts well against the darker tones of the leaves. One problem of this image is that it not focused on the middle of the rose, but the petals beneath it. This has decreased the quality of the image, but I am still happy with the outcome. 

I am not so happy with this photo on the other hand. Although there is a clear contrast between the light toned sky and the dark toned leave, there is not much variation of tones, which was supposed to be the main focus of the image. If I was to shoot this image again I would take it from a different angle so that this dark silhouette was not created, as this makes the image show shape rather than tones. The light would have been coming down on the top of the leaves, so I should have taken this photograph from above. 

Progression

If I were to go out and shoot tone again I would try to experiment with different angles in order to show tone as clearly as I can. In this shoot I had a bit of trouble with angles, so that the tone was not clear in some of my pictures. I could also try shooting tones in colour. I think this would be a challenge but would result in some interesting images. 

This picture below is an example of the kind of tone photography I would like to try in the future. It is in colour, unlike any of my photos, but the variety of tones is still very clear as the colours are all similar. I think that skies are the best thing to photograph in colour for tone as they always vary in tones and colours. This picture has inspire me to try taking some colour tone images of the sky, as I think it could result in some nice Images like this one.

Work Diary - Reflection

Evaluation

I enjoyed shooting pictures of reflection and found it quite different to the other formal elements I had shot. Doing this task made me realise just how much reflection there is in a very small area and because of this I found it very easy to shoot photos of reflection, and I ended up with a lot of shots. After finding all of the obvious examples of reflection, I found it enjoyable looking a lot more carefully and thinking more creatively to find less obvious reflections. As well as this, another positive of the session is that it was a very sunny day so the reflections in my photographs came out very well. If there was no sun the reflections would not be clear at all. 

On the other hand, there were some negatives that I found during this session. The main negative being that my photos were all very similar. The most logical and obvious thing to shoot when looking at reflections was windows and anything glass, so the majority of my photos were pictures of these. Because of this a lot of my images were very similar.

This photo is very relevant to the theme of reflection, however i am not too keen on is as it is not very clear. Also, the reflection does not take up much of the frame. I should have taken the photo from a different angle so that the more of the surroundings could be visible in the reflection. Also, it is not clear enough that this image is a reflection. I should have not taken the image so close up, so that the door that had created the reflection could be fully seen. 

I think this photo is quite a creative example of reflection, which is why I quite like it. The reflections are small however very noticeable. This was taken towards the end of the session when i began to look in closer detail for examples of reflection. I like it because it is not the most obvious example, but it still relates to the reflection theme. I also like how the pins are off centre, but still the main focus of the image as they contrast significantly against the dark blue wall. 


Progression

If I were to go out and shoot reflection again, I would try to shoot a wider variation of images to produce unique images. I would look for more unusual reflections to create some interesting images. I would also try to make sure the images were obvious reflections, so I would clearly include the source of reflection in the pictures. 

This picture below Is an example of the kind of reflection photography I would like to try out. As most of my images were of reflections in windows, something like this would have been a more interesting approach. The reflection is very clear and because of the very plain background, it is the reflection that is focussed on. I also like how the reflection is distorted by the ripples as it is quite effective. I want to try and take pictures of reflections in water as they create clearer reflections, and I also like how the reflection is reversed.

Work Diary - Form

Evaluation

I found the form session the most difficult one so far. Firstly, the outcome of my form photos mostly depended on the light, and when the sun went in I had to wait until it came out again to take any more shots. This meant that taking enough good form photos took a long time. Secondly, I found it hard to find anything that had enough shadow to emphasise the form of the object. Because of this I ended up with a lot of bad pictures, which didn't show form clearly. To overcome this I emphasised the form of the photo through the editing by adding contrast. It was hard to take form pictures indoors because it wasn't very bight so there were less highlights and shadows around the objects. 

Despite these negatives, I enjoyed searching for form indoors and out in order to get a variety of images. I also like some of the camera angles used in my photos as they cause the focus to be on the form of the object. Even though it was a challenge, I enjoyed this session and am relatively happy with the outcome.

I like this picture that I had taken during the form session. Shape is shown very clearly as the window is a clear circle shape. I like how the window is off centre to allow us to see that view from the window contrasts really clearly against the dark wall inside. Colour is also shown as the bright blue sky can be seen from this window. The problem with this form image is that it doesn't show form very clearly. I think it would be more recognisable as a shape image as the circular window is the main focus. 

I think that this picture I had taken shows form very well as there are visible highlights and a shadow due to the lighting. I also like the angle it has been taken from and i think that this emphasises the form of the image, as the highlights on the top of the handle can be clearly seen from above. I think that if I had taken extreme close ups of the handle to emphasise the highlights and shadows, this would have created some even better images for form, and would have taken up more space in the frame. 

Progression

If I were to go out and shoot form again, I'd do it on a day that was very sunny all day so that I'd get better contrast between the highlighted and shadowy areas which would clearly bring out the form of the object. Also, when taking pictures of form indoors I could have used a source of light like a torch to shine onto the object to make the form clearer. I think this would have been a creative approach and would have resulted in some interesting images. 

The picture below is an example of the kind of form photography I would like to do in the future. The shadows and highlights show form very clearly as they are quite contrasting.
